What do you bring to your table?

We have a breakfast table at home, and I always joke with my wife that the table is cursed. Why? Because it is always full of clutter no matter how often I clean it. We rarely use that table for eating; since it was a space, we tended to dump anything and everything on it. That table has always been a source of stress for me.

One day I decided to look closely and analyze the stuff on the table, hoping to break the “curse.”. I discovered that it contained many items: mail, flyers, discount coupons (my wife keeps it because she says that we might use it someday but that someday never comes), bank statements, empty Amazon boxes, my kids’ school report cards, pencils, a (small) vacuum cleaner and a whole lot more. I’ve realized that most of the clutter on that table are unimportant things… things that don’t matter. Amongst all the things on that table, the only things that mattered were the bank statements and my kids’ report cards. Having realized that all the other items were sorted right away, they went straight to the recycling bin (where it belongs) and never reached the table anymore.

“Clutter Means That You Have Not Yet Defined What Matters to You”

This holds true with our lives; if we don’t know what matters, we accumulate non-important things and get involved in non-essential activities that fill our calendars. All of these drain our energy and may cause us unnecessary stress.

Define what matters to you.
