Paper Invasion!

We accumulate a lot of paper regularly, whether we like it or not.

You get papers when you open your mailbox; when you unlock your front door, a newspaper or door hanger is waiting for you; when you do your grocery, you get a paper receipt or even a promotional flyer; when you buy new technology or appliance you get a paper instruction manual, when your kids get home from school, they hand you a memo or their test papers; when you buy online, you get a delivery receipt; when you visit your dentist, they give you your statement of account; when you go to church, you are given a newsletter. Paper invades our homes daily and can get out of hand if you don’t tackle them head-on.

For now, let’s deal with advertising mail.

Advertising mail includes retail flyers, restaurant menus, discount coupons, magazines, store catalogs, and offers from your service providers. I am confident that all the information from these ”papers” are available online and can be easily accessed if and when needed, so there is no reason to hold on to them. Keeping them not only adds clutter to your home but may also add clutter to your mind. It may even tempt you to make unnecessary purchases, adding more material clutter to your home.

Suppose you are anxious that you might miss out on deals. In that case, several apps aggregate deals and discounts for the items and services you usually purchase, such as Flipp, Groupon, Red Flag Deals, and The Coupons App to mention a few.

You can eliminate most of these advertising mail in Canada by simply putting a note in your mailbox stating that you do not wish to receive Canada Post Neighbourhood Mail™. Place the notice in or on your mailbox or on the inside lip of your community mailbox, group mailbox, or postal box. (For more information, visit the Canada Post website, navigate to the Support Page, and click “Stop Sending Me Flyers”). Check your postal office website for other countries if they offer the same service.

These tips will lessen the paper invasion of your house. 😊

I’ll write more about the other paper categories in my next posts.
